Sir David Tang is founder of the pioneering China Club in Hong Kong and its affiliate executive clubs in Beijing and Singapore. He launched the China Tang restaurant in Londonís Dorchester Hotel and the Island Tang restaurant in Hong Kong. He is the owner of Pacific Cigar Company Ltd, the exclusive distributor of Cuban cigars in Canada, Asia, Australia and the South Pacific. He has been a director and advisor to numerous companies, including Blackstone, Tommy Hilfiger and the Savoy Group of Hotels.
Sir David is also the founder of Shanghai Tang, the first international luxury brand to emerge from China with modern ready-to-wear clothing, accessories and home decor.
He was born and educated in Hong Kong. At the age of 13, he attended boarding school in Britain, where he subsequently studied law at Law College and Philosophy, which he taught at Peking University in 1983.
Sir David is passionately involved with the arts. He has been a trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts for 15 years, and is chairman of the Asia- Pacific Acquisitions Committee at the Tate. He is also adviser to the London Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra, and President of the London Bach Society. He is an avid collector of contemporary Chinese art; and has given concerts with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is a governor.
Sir David is also founder of the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, and vice-chairman of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, as well as numerous other charities, but notably as founding president of the Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association, and patron of the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation.
